The Complete Guide to eToro

eToro Homepage

Considering the fact that I’m very interested in Trading and Copy Trading, I decided to write a complete guide to eToro, which is the social trading platform that I’m currently using to do copy trading.

First of all, what is Trading? And what is Copy Trading?

I’ve read on Quora an interesting definition of trading: “Trading is when 2 parties agree on the price of a financial instrument but they perceive its value differently”. That’s it. Trading is buying or selling an asset (commodities, forex, stocks and so on), and doing this because you think you can make a profit from this transaction. The point is that in order to profit from trading you need to study many months or years and you also need an incredible experience on the market.

Copy Trading is completely different, because it’s suitable for almost everyone. It consists in copying a professional trader: you just need to deposit the money and choose which trader to follow. That’s all.

While there exists many platforms better than eToro to do trading, for copy trading eToro is one of the best platforms, and that’s why I chose it.

How can I start investing on eToro?

Start investing on eToro is pretty simple. You just need to open the website, and click on Join Now, as you can see in the image above. Once you’ve clicked on Join Now, a page like this will open.

eToro Join Now page

Here you can see the data you need in order to join eToro: your complete name, an username, an email and a password. (Remember: Always choose a strong password!). You can also sign-up with you Facebook or Google accounts. Moreover, you need to be at least 18 years old. Once you’ve completed this step, you’re ready to make your first deposit on eToro.

That is how your eToro homepage will looks like. Here you can find everything you need: on the left you can browse all the different sections of the platform. Just to make an example, in the image below you can see my Portfolio page.

My Portfolio page

Let’s talk a little bit about the sections you can see on the left of your homepage.

  • Watchlist – Here you can check your personal watchlist, that can be composed by stocks, traders, copy portfolios (I’ll explain later what is a copy portfolio) or a mix of them.
  • Portfolio – Here you can check in every moment the composition of your portfolio and his performance.
  • News Feed – In this section you can find interesting news about the market in general, particular asset or posts from the traders you’re copying or following.
  • Trade Markets – This is the section for traders. Here you can directly trade on stocks, ETF, indices, cryptocurrencies, commodities and currencies.
  • Copy People – This is the section for copy traders. Here you can discover traders to follow.
  • Invest in CopyPortfolios – From this section you can easily invest on eToro’s CopyPortofolios, which are created by the platform itself with a specific theme.

These are the most important sections. In addition, you can browse the Guide section, the Settings sections and many more.

How can I deposit money on eToro?

Now that you’re enrolled in eToro, you can make your first deposit. In order to make the deposit, you have to click on the Deposit Funds blue button that you have at the bottom left of every page. Once you click on it,a page like this will appear.

Fund your Account page

You just have to choose the amount of money you would like to deposit and the Payment Method and then click on Continue. There are many ways to deposit on eToro. I used a simple WireTransfer and I received the money on my account in 2 working days.

Fund Methods page

These are all the different Payment Methods you can choose. I’m sure you’ll find a suitable method for you.

Now that you’ve made your first deposit on the platform you just have to wait for the money on your account.

The minimum deposit amount is between $200 and $500. It depends from the payment method you choose: for example, the minimum deposit amount for Wire Transfer is $500.

The minimum amount you can withdraw from your account is $50.

How to Trade on eToro?

Trading on eToro is pretty simple. You just have to go to Trade Markets section, look for the asset you want to trade and make the operation.

The minimum trade size is based on exposure (leverage x invested amount) and depends on the instrument being traded:

  • Currencies: $4000
  • Stocks and ETFs: $500
  • Cryptocurrencies: $25
  • Commodities and indices: $2000

Do not forget that your capital is at risk, and trading with a profit is not easy at all. I suggest you to read many books before start trading and then to make experience on your Demo account. eToro provides a demo account: you can change the type of your account (Demo or Real) by clicking the button in the upper left of your homepage. You will have $100’000 of virtual money to make experience on the market before trading with your real money. If you are looking for some interesting books about how to start investing, I wrote an article about this topic. You can read it here.

Stock Trading page

This picture illustrates you the options you have to trade on eToro. In this case, I’m trading the Bank of America’s stock. As you can see, you can Sell it or Buy it. You can trade the stock at its market price or insert a particular price at which you want to trade it. Moreover, you need to set the amount of money you want to invest and your Stop Loss and Take Profit.

How to Copy Trade on eToro?

If you’re not interested in trading but in copy trading, this part of the article will be your preferite one. Since I’m not ready to trade in first person, I decided to begin my adventure on eToro by copying other traders. You can find traders to copy in the Copy People page. Before choosing who to copy, I analyzed many different traders and followed their performances for several months, and I suggest you to do the same.

My Portfolio page

This is my current Portfolio. Finally, I chose those two traders because their risk tolerance is similar to mine. I think that you always have to keep in consideration the trader’s risk tolerance while you’re choosing who to copy. As I said, I’m currently copying two different traders: OlivierDanvel with $350.70 and kela-Leo with $250. Next to the name of each trader you can check their performance, that are also yours performance if you’re copying them. For example, by copying OlivierDanvel I’m currently suffering a loss of $0.31.

The minimum amount required to copy another trader is $200. Remember that the suggested minimum amount depends from one trader to another. There are traders that says that to copy them $200 are enough and other traders that need at least $1000 to be copied, for example.

Let’s move on. Here you can see the typical page of a trader.

Trader page

In the Stats page you can check all his past performances, month by month, year by year, and also his risk tolerance. Risk Tolerance is a number from 0 to 10. If it is equal to zero, it means that the trader is incredibly intolerant to risk (lower returns), elsewhere if it is 10 means that he is extremely tolerant to risk (higher returns). You can also find out what the trader trades and how many trades he made.

Once you’ve chosen which trader to copy, you have to click on the Copy blue button you can find on his page. If you click it, a page similar to this will open.

Copy Trader page

You just have to decide how much money to copy the trader and then click on the blue button. In this case you read Deposit Now because I have not enough money available to copy the trader.

CopyPortfolios are the third option you have to earn on eToro. As I said before, they are pre-builded portfolios, composed by different stocks, indices, traders and so on. Every Portfolio has a different objective; there are Portfolios dedicated to cyber stocks, digital payments stocks, trending traders or portfolios that tries to replicate Berkshire Hathaway, for example.

CopyPortfolios page

Just to make an example, I inserted an image of three of the CopyPortfolios you can choose between. Here we have portfolios dedicated to Mobile Payments, Nasdaq and Cyber stocks.

Remember that for CopyPortfolios, the minimum investment is $5,000.

In order to start investing on a Portfolio the method is the same we’ve seen for copy traders. Choose which one you want to invest in, decide the amount of money and click on the Invest button.

I believe I’ve covered all the most important topics about eToro. After reading this complete guide you’ll be able to start investing (and hopefully earning) on this fantastic platform.

Just let me write two considerations before leaving.

  • Never forget that by investing on eToro (or similar platforms) your capital is at risk. You can earn money or lose money, so take care.
  • I’m not yet a financial advisor. I’m just an economics student that loves this kind of topic and that invested on this platform in first person.

Lastly, I leave you the link from which you can subscribe for free to eToro: LINK

I’ll share with you my monthly performance in the Passive Income post that I write every beginning of the month. If you want to find out my Investment Portfolio composition, you can find it at this page.

Thank you for your attention! Let me know in the comments if you have any doubts or if you want to share your experience with eToro.
